KAPETTE is a full handmade wool and cotton hat.
It all started with a simple inspiration drawn from the iconic French gendarme's kepi, introduced in 1861 and abandoned by the national police in 1984 and by prison wardens in 1940.
It is the notion of subverting authority that appeals to me greatly. By delving deeper into this idea, I sought to understand its essence and play with it, all while respecting its meaning.
Initially, my efforts materialized in prototypes resembling the classic French képi. However, as months passed and numerous trials ensued, the design evolved into something more contemporary and practical. Gone were the flat visors; instead, they were replaced by curved ones.
With each iteration, I dared to depart further from tradition, gradually eliminating the calot and allowing the wearer's hair to peek through from the top or the back. This not only streamlined production but also bestowed upon the cap a unique identity.
At present, my focus lies on refining various models. Yet, I find myself drawn back to those initial prototypes, eager to explore new possibilities. I remain enamored by the allure of flat visors and the charm of the calot. Moreover, my imagination is ignited by the timeless elegance of military hats from the end of the 19th century.
Many thanks to photographer Anouk @anoukdlpns, to Élise @elswagman_ who styled and to Benjamin, the beautiful model for these amazing photos, much more credible than my firsts street photos (the colored ones below).
